Dr. Nana Owusu
Optometrist • 2020 Manitoba Association of Optometrist Presidents Award/ Optometrist of the year
Born in Ontario and raised in Alberta, Dr. Nana Owusu holds a degree in Microbiology from University of Alberta, a degree in Health Studies from McMaster University, and a Doctorate degree from the Illinois College of Optometry (ICO). While at ICO, Dr. Owusu received numerous awards and honors including, but not limited to, the American Optometric Foundation Carl Zeiss Vision Fellowship, the Cribb Leadership & Service Award, the American Optometric Leadership Scholarship, and Colleague of the Year for 3 consecutive years, while maintaining his role as the President of the student body.While practicing in America, Dr. Owusu was an adjunct clinical advisor for the ICO Externship Program at a contact lens-based family practice in Florida. Dr. Owusu's current professional affiliations include the Gold Key International Honor Society, the Manitoba Association of Optometrists, the Canadian Association of Optometrists, the Florida Optometric Association, and the American Optometric Association.Dr. Owusu was recently elected to be an active member of the Illinois College of Optometry Board of Trustees, and is also proud to serve as a member of the ICO Alumni Council as well as the student mentorship program. Locally, he is an active member of the Manitoba Association of Optometrist and currently serves as the Vice- President. Dr. Owusu is happy to care for patients of all ages and with varying levels of health and wellness, although he does receive a large number of referrals specifically for pediatric patients and adults with systemic and/ or ocular disease. Dr. Owusu now calls Winnipeg home and when he is not taking care of patients or spending time with family, he enjoys coaching high school football and playing a variety of sports.
Dr. Renee Phipps
Optometrist
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Dr. Renee Phipps holds a degree in Microbiology and Zoology from the University of Manitoba and a Doctorate degree from Illinois College of Optometry. While studying in Chicago, Dr. Phipps received several excellence and achievement awards, including American Optometric Association Contact Lens and Cornea Section Student Research Award, the C. Payton Powell Scholarship, and National Vision Award, all while maintaining an active role in the student government at the College.Dr. Phipps was a contributing writer for the Contact Lens and Cornea Section of the American Optometric Association newsletter; her articles served as instructional tools for her colleagues and peers in the areas of contact lens care and anterior segment ocular disease. Dr. Phipps has participated in a number of volunteer eye care services events, most notably a mission trip to San Carlos, Mexico organized by the Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity Organization and the World Health Organization to provide free eye care to the San Carlos area residents. Dr. Phipps' current professional affiliations include the Gold Key Honors Society, the Manitoba Association of Optometrists, Canadian Association of Optometry, the Florida Optometric Association, and the American Optometric Association. After practicing in Florida, Dr. Phipps is happy to be back in her hometown, Winnipeg. Winnipeg has been a great place to raise her three children and really work with communities. When she is not in clinic, Dr. Phipps serves on a variety of boards and community associations. Dr. Renee is also an author of a children's book, Harry the Bear and the Perfect Pair.
Dr. Kamila Duplak
Optometrist
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Dr. Kamila Duplak attended the University of Winnipeg where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree. Dr. Duplak went on to pursue her Doctorate degree from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science, graduating with honours. Her professional affiliations include the Manitoba Association of Optometrists, the Canadian Association of Optometrists and College of Optometrists in Vision Development.Dr. Duplak has a particular interest in children's vision and ocular health and development but is pleased to offer comprehensive vision care to patients of all ages.Dr. Duplak is happy to offer eye exams in English, Ukrainian and Polish.
Dr. Marco Kosowski
Optometrist
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Dr. Marco Kosowski completed his Bachelor of Science Degree with Distinction at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Kosowski pursued his education and earned his Doctorate degree graduating Cum Laude at the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, Illinois. During his time in Chicago, he was a part of both the Beta Sigma Kappa Honorary Society as well as the Tomb and Key Honorary Society. Dr. Kosowski was also awarded the Trustees Scholarship throughout his graduate program.His professional affiliations include the Manitoba Association of Optometrist, as well as the Canadian Association of Optometrists.In his spare time, Dr. Kosowski enjoys going to the lake with the family, fishing, golfing, playing hockey, and attending Winnipeg Jets games. He is always more than happy to talk sports with his patients.
Dr. Diana Nguyen
Optometrist
Dr. Diana Nguyen received her Honours Bachelor's of Science in Biochemistry at McMaster University and then went to complete her Doctor of Optometry at the University of Waterloo. She practices full scope optometry with a keen interest in dry eye, specialty contact lenses and myopia control. Dr. Nguyen welcomes patients of all ages and enjoys managing diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, acute eye emergencies and glaucoma. She attends many conferences and keeps up to date with the latest in technology and research in eyecare. She is a proud professional affiliate of the Manitoba Association of Optometrists, the Canadian Association of Optometrists and the Ontario Association of Optometrists. She has a commitment to volunteer work and went on a mission trip to Peru in 2018. Dr. Nguyen also writes educational dry eye blogs at MyDryEye.ca and plans a well-established dry eye conference year-round with leaders in the optometry field. While outside of the clinic, Dr. Nguyen enjoys hiking, weight lifting and spending time with her family and friends.
Dr. Mackenzie Large
Optometrist
Born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Mackenzie Large earned a Bachelor of Science degree studying Molecular and Cellular Biology and Chemistry at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Large then completed her Doctorate degree at the Illinois College of Optometry, where she was awarded the Turner Scholarship throughout her Optometry program. Upon graduation, Dr. Large practiced in Illinois where she was a member of the Illinois Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. Her current professional affiliations include the Manitoba Association of Optometrists and the Canadian Association of Optometrists. Dr. Large recently moved from Chicago to Winnipeg, and has enjoyed exploring the city and getting to know its residents. In her spare time, Dr. Large enjoys being outdoors, bike riding and hiking, and trying new restaurants (let her know if you have any recommendations!) She’s happily accepting new patients at the McIvor and Northgate clinics.
Dr. Julia Maida
Optometrist
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Dr. Julia Maida completed a Bachelors in Biochemistry at the University of Winnipeg. Dr. Maida continued her studies south of the border in Chicago where she earned her Doctorate degree at the Illinois College of Optometry, graduating with clinical honours. During her studies, Dr. Maida enjoyed providing eye care to off duty veterans at the W.J.B Veterans Affairs Medical Centre in Columbia, South Carolina. Her professional affiliations include the Manitoba Association of Optometrists, Canadian Association of Optometrists, and the American Optometric Association. Dr Maida is happy to provide comprehensive care to patients of all ages! Dr Maida loves to spend her free time watching bomber and jets games while also cooking with her big Italian family!
